    Are the shelves adjustable? What are their dimensions, including thickness? Will they take a heavy weight of books? Is the bookcase actually painted, or varnished?

      The shelves are adjustable, they are about 2cm thick, we have various shapes weight and hight books on the two we purchased and I believe its varnish.
